tGELF is an organisation that creates platforms for students to hone their leadership skills. Under their auspices, a group of 7 class X students from Chettinad Hari Shree Vidyalayam got the opportunity to participate in Harmony 2012 at Gurgoan on 16th and 17th November 2013.
The street play and the debate team qualified in the regional round held in Chennai and moved on to the national level. At the national level there were over 250 students participating in various competitions.
The debate team consisting of Radhika and Arvind made us proud by coming in as the II runner up. It was heart-warming to see the street play group stand their ground despite stiff competitions.
On the whole the trip happened to be a package deal of both fun and learning for the students, the teacher and the school. The “take home” from the whole experience was surely fruitful and it also left us in no doubt about the talent pool at our home base.
Along the same lines, Akshay Sivakumar and P.C.Siddarth, our student leaders, have been qualified to participate in a high profile symposium in Doha Qatar in December. They are eagerly looking forward to this journey.
Due to rain, after school sports stands cancelled till further notification.
Step right up and mark your calendars for Dec 14. Bring your family and friends for a fun filled day!
Another opportunity for us to celebrate courage, confidence, creativity, and compassion as students of classes 8 to 12 will be engaging the ideals of the United Nations.
Student volunteers, headed by Rakshita Arun and Aditi Balaji are organizing the CHSV Model UN, which will see participation from students of class 8 to 12.
Looking forward to the discussions, debates, motions, points of information, resolutions, and voting!
Kofi Annan, United Nations Secretary General from 1997-2006, wrote ,”In the 21st century, I believe the mission of the United Nations will be defined by a new, more profound awareness of the sanctity and dignity of every human life, regardless of race and religion.” The true challenge of leadership is to maintain a vision for a better world.
Dr. Madhu Purshothaman interacted with Junior Campus parents on ‘Healthy Child, Smart Child’ on 9thNovember.
The team working with the “ Parent Circle Magazine” and Dr. Madhu Padmanabhan, Consultant Paediatrician- Apollo Children ‘ s Hospital , Chennai got together to present an interactive session on why and how good health is important for optimal school performance. The parents of children studying in the junior campus and teachers formed the audience for the interactive session.
Dr. Purshothaman , with the help of various slides presented pertinent information on a child’s health, the benefits of vaccination and the importance of regular health checkups.
He strived to create awareness on various issues pertaining to the health of children. He also stressed the role of the parent and of the doctor in ensuring good health and how health is linked to optimal performance in school.
An important aspect was the dangers of self medication. Parents were advised against giving Iron tonics or supplements without consulting their child’s paediatrician.
The benefits of vaccination were very clearly explained. A question posed by parents on the need and the usefulness of these vaccines was also answered by the doctor.
When asked on other healing methods like Ayurveda or Homoeopathy, the doctor with a gentle smile professed no knowledge about them and said that it depended on the individual.
Dr. Madhu also stressed on periodic health check up for children as opposed to taking them to a doctor only when there is a need.
Dr. Madhu said ‘I thank Hari Shree Vidyalayam for giving me this opportunity. I am impressed with the turn out of parents on a Saturday morning.”
Parents said “We were very happy with the information imparted. Please keep giving us such workshops!”
Student leaders, Akshay Sivakumar and Siddarth P.C are nominated as delegates for Doha GOALS – a Leadership Conference- which will be held in Qatar between December 9 – 11, 2013.
Who is a leader?
How does one feel being a student leader? On top of the world, right! Everyone looks up to you; you have a position… responsibility; you sport a badge proudly; you are called for every occasion there is in school….and….perks like missing classes…..life can’t be better!
Whoa…..wait a minute. Have you considered the flip side of the coin? You can’t put a foot out of line; people are always watching you; you constantly hear this din…….’You are a leader….how can you behave like this?’ There is pressure from all quarters.
The story is one of balance. Leadership roles teach students the art of oraganisation, interaction, communication, and many more ‘tions…’. It’s a package deal…though there are some banes, it’s definitely best platform to teach oneself and learn naturally.
Recently, under the auspices of tGELF, two students from Chettinad Hari Shree Vidyalayam were chosen to be a part of a young leaders forum Doha Goals, needless to say, set to be held in Doha, Qatar in December. Student leaders, Akshay Sivakumar and Siddharth P.C. were awarded this opportunity after careful scrutiny and thought process. From then on the journey began for the two youngsters.
They had to complete formalities like filling in application forms and other paper work. Once this was out of the way, and they got a go ahead from their mentors at tGELF, they started preparing for final act. At this conference, they will be, along with many other peers, in the company of prominent achievers in the sports arena.
The boys made their choice of topics from a given list. Preparations meant incessant research, long phone conversations with each other to concur on ideas and interacting with mentors and acharyas for input. They are expected to present their ideas at this conference.
The theme around Doha Goals is how young leaders can make a difference and a change. We wish our boys good luck in this endeavour! Waiting for the Big Day!
