Prefectorial Board

A Prefect is a pupil who has been given limited and reliable authority over other pupils in the school. Being prefects gives them an opportunity to bring out their leadership qualities for higher responsibilities in future. The opportunity they get now to serve will be stepping stone to become greater and better leaders in future respecting the rights of those they are leading.

Nominations are invited from Class V to Class IX. Elections are held class-wise (Class V to IX) for the selection of the Prefects. The Prefects report to the school Head Girl and Head Boy, who are elected through general elections. The hierarchy and the list of Prefects are listed under Student Council.

Principles of Prefectship

  1. Example: A prefect's first duty is to set an example in every possible way to all other students. He/she has been selected to be a Prefect because he/she is believed to be worthy of that position. Other students are bound to look up to him/her and largely to model their own conduct on his/her. Hence, he/she must always remember that by the way he/she behaves he/she is setting the standards of the school.
  2. Observance of Rules and Discipline: The main business of a Prefect is to see that other students keep the rules. To do this effectively, it is essential that he/she keeps the rules himself. If other students see a Prefect breaking the rules, they will cease to respect either the rules, or the Prefect, or both.
  3. Sense of Responsibility: A sense of responsibility is perhaps the most important characteristic that schools try to produce. Prefects, should try to develop a sense of responsibility.
  4. Impartiality: Favoritism is contrary to the school spirit. The quality of impartiality, like responsibility, is one that is expected of Hari Shree school students in later life. It is, therefore, necessary for Prefects to practice impartiality in the conduct of their duties and to guard carefully against the danger of favoring their friends and peers.
  5. Guidance and Leadership: A Prefect should always be ready to help other students with their problems, but of course, to take an interest in particular juniors would be tactless and unwise. Prefects are the first authorities who other students should approach for help. It is the highest duty of a Prefect to help those who need it, especially younger students who are troubled by others. A Prefect must never ignore or condone bullying.
  6. Gentleness: A Prefect should be capable of carrying out his duties in a gentle manner. To adopt the manner of a sergeant major is generally a sign of lack of confidence.
  7. Loyalty: Last, but not least, loyalty is important. Loyalty means above all loyalty to the school, i.e., a keen regard for the welfare of the school and its values. It is hoped that all Prefects would be keen that the school should be a good school. The goodness of the school depends as much on the Prefects as on anything else.

Duties and Privileges

  1. Prefects have a general responsibility for maintaining orderly behavior, observance of rules and good tone throughout the school.
  2. Prefects are to be on duty at Assembly and all school functions. For these, a duty list must be made by the Captain of the School.
